In her later life, Doris Day has chosen to disappear from the public view, but she was all the rage after the release of her comedy western Calamity Jane in 1953. The Ballad of Josie tries desperately to recapture that magic and might as well be titled, 'Hey Please God Remember Calamity Jane?!'. Doris Day herself said it was "nothing more than a second-rate television western that required me to get up at four-thirty every morning." Lacking a good budget and passion from producers, Day still treated the character of Josie with respect, and it shows clearly in the movie. Along with Day's futile efforts, the movie is chock full of trivia. Not only is it Andy Devine's last movie before he went exclusively to television, but it's George Kennedy's first release after his Oscar for Cool Hand Luke, and the last film of William Talman (Perry Mason). All of the actors were looking to be in something better. Que Sera Sera.
