RKO Original Insert Poster (14x36) Condition Very Fine

RKO Original Insert Card (14x36) for the Jacques Tourneur directed horror film CAT PEOPLE (1942) starring Simone Simon, Kent Smith, and Dot Farley. CAT PEOPLE is a horror film, but not one in any conventional sense. It is more filled with psychological dread than true horror. The story concerns a Serbian woman who turns into a cat when she is sexually aroused or angered. If this sounds a little ahead of wartime audiences, it was. The fantasy element of the film is hung on rather conventional melodrama, but the deft touch of director Tourneur has left us with a film, the reputation for which has grown over the years as decidedly spooky. The picture opened to mixed reviews. But horror fans and cinema lovers have accorded the film a place of honor in the decades since it was released. In 1993, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, implemented by the Library of Congress. Part of the reason for the intense atmospherics of the movie is the partnership of Tourneur with cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca. They would partner again in 1948 on OUT OF THE PAST, arguably one of the best looking, best acted film noirs ever made. The other element of the production that cannot be ignored is the producer, Val Lewton. Lewton actually wrote the short story upon which the film was based. Lewton was great at extracting mystery and surprise in his films and certainly CAT PEOPLE is a prime example of this. This beautiful insert is little seen, and the poster incorporates the mystery of the movie with the "look" of RKO half sheets and inserts. MovieArt Austin guarantees that this poster is an authentic, vintage U.S. insert card for this film. Condition is very fine. MovieArt Austin will sell no reproductions
