Paramount PIctures Original U.S. One-Sheet Poster (27x41) Folded Average Used Good Condition

Original U.S. One-Sheet Poster for the musical film DIXIE (1943) directed by A. Edward Sutherland and starring Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Billy DeWolfe, Marjorie Reynolds, Lynne Overman, Eddie Foy, Jr., and Raymond Walburn. Bing Crosby was, at the time, one of the biggest stars on radio, appearing weekly on the Kraft Music Hall program. At the same time he was arguably the biggest star at Paramount. This movie is a biopic of Daniel Decatur Emmett, a composer for minstrel shows, who wrote the song "Dixie" in 1959. The movie was made at the height of World War II in Technicolor, and it was filled with songs, some penned by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen and some are old chestnuts like "The Last Rose of Summer" and "Buffalo Gals". Crosby and other performers appear in blackface in the film - in the minstrel show tradition - and it has been asserted that the film is not shown for this reason. This is unsubstantiated, and the reason is probably more that Universal now owns the rights to hundreds of Paramount films made during this period. Because of the way that the songs in the film mirror Crosby's recording output during the period, the movie is an important entry in his film career. The history of the film is covered well in Gary Giddon's second volume of his Crosby biography "Swinging on a Star." A great read by one of the best jazz writers. The poster is in average used condition, has some tears. Colors are vivid. MovieArt Original Film Posters in Austin, Texas guarantees that this poster is an authentic, vintage poster for this film.
