Fitzcarraldo is based loosely on the story of rubber baron Carlos Fitzcarrald, who transported a steamship (disassembled into various parts) over some mountains to reach the amazon basin. In Herzog's film the protagonist, rebranded Fitzcarraldo, purports to get the whole damn ship over the mountains. The film has a storied history, and the production was difficult. It is MAD.
