This movie, which starred William Holden, Kim Novak and Rosalind Russell, must be seen as one of the principal melodramas of the 1950s. And it was one of the biggest films for Kim Novak, who was, at the time, the biggest contract player for Columbia. A drifter comes to town and woos a beautiful girl. It gets steamy, as you might expect. Add to this the story of a slightly neurotic middle aged woman, played beautifully by Rosalind Russell, and you have PICNIC. Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning play by William Inge, the film had a deft screenplay by Daniel Taradash. Photographed by James Wong Howe, with a great score by George Duning.
