Original U.S. scene lobby card (11x14) for the Norman Jewison family musical, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (1971) starring Topol, Norman Crane, Leonard Frey, and Molly Picon. This is the film version of the Broadway musical, based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, about a poor Jewish peasant in pre-revolutionary Russia who must deal with marrying off his three daughters in an atmosphere of anti-Semitic and state sanctioned pogroms. The Broadway production opened at the Imperial Theater in New York in September of 1964 and ran for 3,242 performances, setting a record for the longest running show at that time. Director Jewison wanted the whole film shot in an "earthy tone " So cinematographer Oswald Morris shot most of the film with a woman's brown stocking over the lens. Morris won the Oscar for Best Cinematography, and the film received two other Oscars for Best Editing and Best Original Score to John Williams. The card is signed by Topol. We purchased a collection of signed lobby cards from the estate of a gentleman who worked in film distribution. As this man met actors along the paths of their careers, he asked for signatures.
