Original Italian Foglio Poster (28x40) for the Irving Cummings musical comedy, THAT NIGHT IN RIO (1941) [Italian Title: UNA NOTTE A RIO] starring Alice Faye, Don Ameche, and Carmen Miranda. This lively musical romp is filmed in 20th Century-Fox's idiosyncratic, some might say "garish," Technicolor. The film features the incredible Carmen Miranda in her second American film, while Ameche and Faye appear in their last film together. Although the plot seems totally implausible, the lavish production numbers make up for it. We think this is absolutely the best Carmen Miranda poster we have ever seen. Incredibly festive and fun, the poster features art by Rinaldo Geleng. Rinaldo Geleng (1920-2003). Geleng was born in Rome. His father was a painter and so his talent to draw may have come naturally. He studied at the San Michele Institute, and became very adept as a cartoonist and caricaturist. Comparisons of his career with that of Al Hirschfeld are natural because both became known for their caricatures of celebrities, actors, actresses and people in the news. He became friends with Federico Fellini in 1939, and would later create posters for some of Fellini's movies. He did a lot of illustration for magazines. He soon gained some fame in Rome for his brilliant work. He worked in Paris beginning in 1959 as Artistic Director of the Opera Mundi. Some of the films for which Geleng did posters include the 1949 re-release in Italy for SCARFACE, FRENCHMAN'S CREEK, DAKOTA LIL, HILLS OF OLD WYOMING and the wonderful portrait of Carmen Miranda for THAT NIGHT IN RIO.
