Original Griffith 1940s Re-Release 30x40 Silkscreen poster for the D. W. Griffith historical drama, BIRTH OF A NATION (1915) starring Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, and Henry B. Walthall. Generally considered to be the "first" American masterpiece and representing an impressive and innovative display of cinematic skills for 1915, the film suffers from bad racial stereotyping and glorification of the Ku Klux Klan. Of course, the 1915 release of the film was silent, but in 1930 a sound version was released. This poster advertises a full orchestral accompaniment. The exact date of this re-release we have not been able to determine, but we believe it to be from the late 30s or 40s. The poster was found in an archive of a theater in Dallas, Texas.
