Based on real life events and in the Tarzan tradition with an environmental twist, this film tells the story of young Tomme (Boorman), who is silently kidnapped by a native Brazilian tribe called the "Invisible People." They bear no ill will toward the boy; indeed, they believe that he would be better off with them than with the "Termite People," the name they give to the white men who devour all the trees. His father spends the next ten years searching for his son. He finally finds him, but the adventure is far from over. Apparently, John Boorman admits that C. Thomas Howell was his first choice for Tomme, but when he was unavailable, he gave the part to his son Charley, whose performance is nothing short of brilliant.
