The notorious island prison of Alcatraz, smack dab in the middle of San Francisco Bay, served as a US Federal prison until the mid-1960s. As the inmates were able to see the city from the prison cell, and consequently the possibility of freedom, the island has long served as a powerful image for both film and literature. This movie, based on an actual escape attempt, was filmed on location. Art on the poster is that of a shackled inmate behind what appears to be an invisible fence -- a fitting allegory.
