Abkco Films Original Italian 55x120 poster for the Alexandro Jodorowsky directed film THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973). The title in Italian is LA MONTAGNA SACRA, and the first release of the film was distributed by Stefano Film. Jodorowky has achieved some notice with the release of his previous film EL TOPO (1970). The movie drew the attention of both John Lennon and George Harrison, who contributed some of the funds, along with Yoko Ono, for the production of THE HOLY MOUNTAIN. The Beatles manager, Allen Klein, became the producer of this surrealist film from Mexico. The movie enjoys serious status as a cult film, along with its predecessor. The movie, which is essentially about a sacred journey, was based on Ascent of Mount Carmel by John of the Cross and Mount Analogue by Rene Daumal. A score was provided by Don Cherry and Jodorowski contributed also. Psychedelic drugs played a big part in the realization of the movie, and it's fame has revolved around the spiritual revelations involved in the story and also the actual production of the film.
