The film stars Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, Margaret Lindsay, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, George Brent, Donald Crisp, Fay Bainter and Spring Byington. Bette Davis is a malignant Southern woman in this romantic period melodrama. Davis had lost out to Vivien Leigh for the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Selznick's GONE WITH THE WIND, despite overwhelming audience polls demanding the role for Davis. (Thank God that did not happen.) So the story has emerged that War Bros offered this role to Davis as a kind of compensation, Warner's having hoped that Bette Davis would sail into GONE WITH THE WIND with no trouble. Yet JEZEBEL was a happy occasion for Davis, as she netted herself a second Best Actress Oscar. After JEZEBEL there was never any doubt that Davis was a major star and was considered the template for a "Great Actress". She certainly perfected this type of character when she went on to star in THE LITTLE FOXES. Fay Bainter also won an Oscar for her role. Curiously, the reception for JEZEBEL was somewhat mild.
