UGC Original French 32x47 Poster for the Robert Bresson film JOURNAL D'UN CURE DE CAMPAGNE (1954) (DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST). The fourth film of great filmmaker Robert Bresson, based on a novel by Georges Bernanos, Diary of a Country Priest is one of the great moments in the history of the French Cinema. The film tells the story of a young priest assigned to his first parish in a small country town. He encounters apathy and even hostility from the parishioners, which pushes him to doubt himself and even his faith. Bresson strips away inessentials and focuses on his subject with an almost painterly precision that would emerge over the further course of an amazing career as a philosophy of cinŽmatographie as a powerful artistic medium. The young priest is played by Claude Laydu. His debut in this film is remarkable, one of the great performances. Belgian by birth and a Catholic, his ascetic quality and his own deep spirituality informs the role. The character of the priest and the directness of the sense of the film is beautifully conveyed in this poster, perhaps the best poster on the title worldwide. This country-of-origin stone litho poster has retained rich color and has been professionally mounted on linen. Minor signs of handling are slightly perceptible, including fold wear, and a small stain at the center horizontal fold at the right border. Very Fine- on Linen. MovieArt Austin guarantees that this poster is an authentic French 32x47 poster for this film. MovieArt Austin will sell no reproductions.
