Paramount Pictures Original U.S. One-Sheet Poster for the 1921 German Film DAS INDISCHE GRABMAL ZWEITER TEIL - TIGER VON ESCHNAPUR. The film was directed by one of the pioneers of German cinema, Joe May. The film stars Conrad Veidt and Mia May. Joe May was born Joseph Otto Mandl in Vienna in 1880. He began his career as a stage director of operetta in Hamburg. He married the actress Mia May in 1902 and took her stage name as his own. He began making films in 1912. In 1915 he formed his own production company, May-Film, and in 1917 he gave Fritz Lang one of his first jobs in the cinema as a screenwriter. In 1921, May directed the two part film DAS INDISCHE GRABMAL (THE INDIAN TOMB). Lang wrote the screenplay with Thea von Harbou, adapted from her novel. Fritz Lang's history and fame is well known, of course, and Harbou is famous for having written the script for METROPOLIS (1927). The two films were distributed by Paramount as THE MYSTERIES OF INDIA, PART I: TRUTH and THE MYSTERIES OF INDIA, PART II: ABOVE ALL LAW. It is for this film, Part II, that we offer this American poster. The borders of the poster were trimmed and the image that remained was about 24x37. The poster was linen-backed and a minimal restoration was done. Later a second restoration was done, filing in some holes in the background area only. Lang and Harbou were married although they split near the time that Lang emigrated to the United States. Fritz Lang would remake this story as JOURNEY TO THE LOST CITY in 1960. A very rare poster indeed. MovieArt Original Film Posters in Austin, Texas guarantees that this poster is authentic. MovieArt Austin does not sell reproductions.
