Hanks plays a successful lawyer who is fired from his position with a conservative law firm because he has AIDS. He hires a homophobic small time lawyer (Washington) as the only willing advocate for a wrongful dismissal suit. Hanks breaks free of Hollywood's stereotypical portrayals of gay men and presents his character as a normal guy. His touching and nuanced performance won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, and Bruce Springsteen also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
