The film stars Marlene Dietrich as Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. The film also stars John Lodge, Sam Jaffe, Louise Dresser, Sir Aubrey Smith, James Burke and a host of other actors. This was an epic production for Paramount. Based on the diaries of Princess Sophia Frederica / Catherine II, the pictures was absolutely tailor-made for Dietrich. Glamour is abundant in the film, and the costumes by Travis Banton are elaborate. Princess Sophia Frederica marries the hapless and reckless Grand Duke Peter, and finds the marriage unbearable. So she plots to oust the Russian and succeed him. But the entire movie has the stamp of Von Sternberg all over it, who helped to edit and produce it as well as direct it.
