Fontaine plays Jenny, an actress whose stage fright contributes to her alcoholism. She meets and falls in love with advertising executive Alan (Milland), who is himself a recovering alcoholic. But Alan is married to Edna (Wright) who understands the struggle her husband faces everyday but never suspects him of seeing another woman. Fontaine and Milland are perfect as doomed lovers who understand their relationship was doomed from the beginning.
