The screenplay was by the great Texas screenwriter Horton Foote. The story concerns a down-on-his-luck washed up country music singer who finds his self respect, after a profligate life, in a place where he would not expect it. One of the great performances by Robert Duvall and for it he was awared the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor. Foote also won an Oscar for his screenplay.
