After settling his differences with a Japanese POW camp commander (Hayakawa), a British colonel (Guiness) cooperates to oversee his men's construction of a railway bridge for their captors , while oblivious to a play by the Allies to destroy it. From the very beginning of the film to its spectacular climax, Lean builds and maintains the subtle tension that underscores this exceptional drama. This critically acclaimed film and box office favorite won seven Academy Awards , including Best Actor to Guiness, Best Director to Lean, Best Musical Score, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture.
