Private Detective Jake Gittes (Nicholson) takes a seemingly simple case of a philandering husband that ultimately envelops him in a complex web of murder, incest, and municipal corruption on a grand scale. Truly deserving of its place as one of the greatest films of all time, everything about the film-- acting, cinematography, script, atmosphere, and music-- are superb. The film received 11 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director for Polanski, Best Actor for Nicholson, and Best Actress for Dunaway. Robert Towne won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
