Columbia Pictures Original U.S. Half-Sheet Poster (22x28) Average Used Condition Good

Original Columbia PIctures U.S. half sheet poster (22x28) for the Josef Von Sternberg directed film CRIME AND PUNISHMENT (1935) starring Edward Arnold, Marian Marsh, Tala Birell, Elisabeth Risdon, Robert Allen, Douglass dumbrille and Gene Lockhart. Josef Von Sternberg, who had been the Svengali-like figure in the career of Marlene Dietrich, had ended his seven year contract with Paramount. The former head of production at Paramount, B.P. Schulberg had been booted from Paramount as well. So Schulberg moved to the relatively "poor" studio, Columbia, with a view to bring prestige to the studio. The development of the film reflected a trend in Hollywood to adapt classical literature into film versions in order to give heft to motion pictures. But at Columbia, the mogul Harry Cohn was happy to adapt a novel which was in the public domain and therefore could be done without having to pay for rights. The film got a big cast including the amazing Peter Lorre as the young homicidal college student. But the production code that had recently been enacted insured that the subtler aspects of Dostoevsky's tale would be quashed and the film turned into a more routine crime film. This poster was used in a theater, and shows some signs of general use. It is a bit brown and could benefit certainly from restoration. No paper is missing however, and U.S. posters for the film have been generally scarce. MovieArt Original Film Posters in Austin, Texas guarantees that this poster is an authentic, vintage U.S. half-sheet poster for this film. MovieArt Austin does not sell reproductions.
