It is regarded as a classic film noir. The film was originally titled THE CITY IS DARK, but somewhere along the line someone decided that the title should be changed to CRIME WAVE. Perhaps the title was too resonant with the titles of other noirs like DARK CITY or NIGHT AND THE CITY. But whatever it was it was finally distributed as CRIME WAVE.
