MGM Original U.S. Insert Card poster (14x36) in fine plus to very fine condition,folded, for one of the most beloved science-fiction films of the 1950s. MGM gave this film the premium treatment in CinemaScope and Eastman Color. Loosely based on Shakespeare's play THE TEMPEST, the film introduced the world's most lovable, if not most original, robot, Robbie. Robbie was practically the star of this film, although MGM veteran player Walter Pidgeon, lithe and beautiful Anne Francis and a young actor named Leslie Nielsen would illuminate the story. The movie was directed by Fred McLeod Wilcox. It cannot be overstated that no one on the MGM lot thought that this movie would become one of the classic films of the decade. But it did. The insert poster repeats the art of the one-sheet in a beautifully arranged vertical format. The classic image of the girl in the monster's arms had been used before, certainly. But Robbie was not exactly a monster. Still there is an element of, well, sex, in the composition. But as in the film itself, Robbie is certainly the star of this poster. As Shakespeare wrote, "What's past is prologue." This poster was used in a theater and has survived the years very well. Colors are vivid.. The image area is great, but there are some small tears to the edges and one tear that extends about an inch into the background area. The poster has tape on the reverse side to reinforce the folds.
