20th Century Fox Original U.S. One-Sheet Poster for the Samuel Fuller directed film HELL AND HIGH WATER (1954) starring Richard Widmark, Bella Darvi, Cameron Mitchell, Gene Evans, David Wayne, Victor Francen and Richard Loo. Fuller did not want to do the film, but he did do it as a favor to Darryl F. Zanuck, who had given the maverick director some cover from the wrath of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover's ire over Fuller's film PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET. Zanuck wanted to show the studio that Fox's widescreen process could be used for something besides epics (THE ROBE, DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATORS). Fuller took an interest in this aspect of the assignment and made a claustrophobic widescreen movie in the confines of a submarine. Bella Darvi provided female interest. Darvi was Zanuck's girlfriend, and her role in the film won her a Golden Globe as Best Female Newcomer. The big CinemaScope logo on the poster underscores the film's history.
