This sumptuous European production based on the famous novel by Thomas Hardy chronicles a poor girl who is used and abused in her search for love, affection, and devotion. The acting performances of Kinski and Firth are both exceptional and memorable. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Score, and Best Director for Polanski.
