Original First National Scene lobby card from Chaplin's most famous silent film, THE KID (1921). A more pure fusion of love and comedy has seldom been seen in all of cinema history. The film stars Chaplin as The Tramp character that he created, that made him world famous. An abandoned child, played beautifully by Jackie Coogan, is protected by from harm by The Tramp. Also seen in this card is actor Tom Wilson as The Cop. The image was generated from a photograph taken on the set. The film was the first feature film directed by Chaplin and it premiered in Chicago on January 16, 1921 as THE WAIF. But by the time it was shown in New York City five days later, the title had been changed to THE KID. The film also featured in the cast Edna Purviance, Carl Miller, and a 14 year old Lita Grey, who played an angel. Jackie Coogan was coached by his father, who appears (uncredited) in the film as a pickpocket and as the devil. This card is 105 years old, and it has survived a century of collecting relatively unscathed. There are four pinholes in the corners, evidence of some adoring collector who decided to display it. I will say without reservation that this is the best lobby card that I have ever carried, certainly the best card from the silent era. After a careful review of lobby cards from this film, this card is exceptional in two ways, I think. It is the rarest, without any doubt. And also it is the most charming.
