This film explores a liberated schoolteacher at an Edinburgh girls' school in the 1930's who ignores the school's mundane curriculum to concentrate rather on love, politics, and art. This wonderfully adapted screenplay is a study of charisma and influence as well as being a complex and fascinating coming of age story. Maggie Smith won the Oscar for Best Actress; indeed, this performance remains one of her best in her long and distinguished career.
